Step Five - Oxidation of Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate

Possible but not a good idea.

If you oxidise the aldehyde group to a carboxylic acid that will get you closer to lactate but what about the ATP you need to make? By just oxidising you could be wasting the free energy change for this process. You need to couple oxidation with phosphorylation.
