Step Nine - Dephosphorylation of 2-phosphoglycerate

Possible, desirable but not quite optimal.

The phosphate does need to come off. However, if you put it off until nearer the end of the pathway you can arrange for an irreversible step to close the pathway. For the moment the task is to remove the hydroxyl group from carbon 3.
